What are Behaviours that may challenge?

Injury to themselves or others i.e. head banging, hitting, biting, hair pulling, throwing things, spitting 


Offensive language, screaming, shouting, threats, abuse, repetitive speech 


Being destructive, rocking, pacing, stealing, withdrawal, inappropriate sexualised behaviours, eating inedible objects 


Reasons & Causes of Behaviours that may challenge

There are a number of common possible reasons that an individual may present with behaviours that may challenge, to name only a few:

To get noticed or acknowledged by others 


To get away from a situation or task the person finds difficult 


To get something they want (e.g. food, activities, etc.) 


Because it feels good 


To express their emotions to others 


To let other know about it or to manage their discomfort.
